Etiological Approach to the Avoidant Personality Disorder

Abstract

|
Avoidant personality disorder is a new addition to DSM-III, and may be considered as a relatively new concept.
The author tried to review various theories on the etiological approach to this newly conceptualized disorder, including biological, psychoanalytical, and socio-cultural aspects with attachment theory.
Also, the author tried to apply these theories to a case of avoidant personality disorder who had been treated by the author.
Through reviewing the etiological theories and applying them to a case. the author concluded that it is more practical to adopt the muitifactorial approach than an unifactorial one.
